Track-Used Official Program

The historic program has been retained in protected storage as part of the private archives of the Chenery family, who attended the race. The inaugural running of the Sept. 15, 1973, Marlboro Cup at Belmont Park was historic in several ways. First, the invitational race launched the concept of corporate sponsorship of sports- a universal practice today. Secondly, the invitational race with the rich purse of $250,000, was promoted as the "Thoroughbred Race of the Year" and attracted an awe-inspiring field with newly anointed Triple Crown winner Secretariat facing a formidable field of older Grade I stakes winners, including Riva Ridge, his champion Meadow Stable barn mate in a rare meeting of Kentucky Derby winners. And finally, the race lived up to the hype with Secretariat's commanding victory over a very game Riva Ridge in an electrifying performance that established a new world record for the 1 1/8 mile distance.
