The 1973 Man O’ War Stakes

On October 8, 1973 Secretariat made his penultimate start and final race at Belmont Park this time making his first start on the grass in The Man o' War Stakes.  The race featured Tentam and Secretariat bringing together two horses who were world record holders at the same distance on different surfaces.  Although it was his first grass start, Secretariat went off as the  1/2 odds-on favorite and won by 5 lengths, setting a new track record of 2:24 4/5 proving beyond a doubt his superiority regardless of racing on grass or dirt.  Secretariat would be awarded U.S. Champion Turf Horse and U.S. Horse of the Year.

“People won’t believe me, but Secretariat was 10-to-15 lengths better on turf than dirt,”...
“I couldn’t believe it myself, but he was just outstanding on turf.”......A few days before the Man o’ War, I told Lucien, ‘You’re going to see something special on Saturday.’”

Ron Turcotte,  Jockey.
