The 1973 Preakness Stakes
Secretariat captured the second leg of the Triple Crown on May 19, 1973 at the Pimlico Race Course in front of a then record setting crowd of 61,657 spectators. Breaking in last position, he made a huge move taking the lead at the 1st turn and never again was challenged beating Sham for a 2 ½ length victory.
For the first time in history the top three finishers in the Derby and Preakness were the same (Secretariat, Sham, and Our Native) as was the distance between each of the horses.
Secretariat’s time of 1:53 set a track record which still stands today. Secretariat earned $129,900 for the win.
